Recitals, Festivals and Events
Fall/Winter 2023:
Spring 2024:
FSMTA District IV Sonatina and Sonata Festival
Any student who has learned and memorized a Sonatina or Sonata may participate. The fee is $15 per student for FSMTA teachers.
JMTA Student Recitals
Selected students of JMTA teachers may participate in the JMTA Student Recitals, held in October, December, and March.
FSMTA District IV Student Day testing will be held in March of 2024. I will be providing students with their Student Day worksheets that they can study for this event. According to the JMTA website, "Student Day is one of the best structured and comprehensive music evaluation programs in existence. And, it gives students a great sense of accomplishment." It is not a competition between students. There are three main areas of testing: Performance before a judge (two or three memorized pieces, depending on the level), Written Theory exam, and Aural Theory exam, with a group recital at the end. Each student participating will receive their gold medal and Student Day certificate at my spring studio recital in May and will be recognized. If a student receives Honors in Performance with at least Achievement in Written and Aural Theory, that student will receive an invitation from the District IV Student Day to perform at the Honors Recital wearing concert dress, usually held eight days after Student Day. For more information about Student Day, visit the JMTA website's Student Day page:

Federation is also a popular and valuable annual music evaluation program, held in February of 2024, at First Baptist Church downtown, 124 W. Ashley Street. Participating students choose which day they would like to attend, and should give themselves about 1 1/2 hours in attendance. There are two main areas of testing: Performance before a judge (two memorized pieces), and a Written Theory exam. The student will receive their certificates for each of these at my spring studio recital in May. If a student receives a Superior three years in a row, they will receive a gold trophy at the end of the third year for both the performance audition and the written theory. Every three years they can earn trophies, each time larger in size. Florida Federation is a member of the National Member of Music Clubs. For more information, visit this website: https://www.ffmc-music.org/
Greater Jax Competition - for those students who participated in Federation and received a Superior in their piano solo audition, they may participate in the Greater Jax Competition held usually in April. They play their "required" piece before judges and compete with other students at their level.
The Piano Guild, through the National Guild of Piano Teachers (American College of Musicians), will be held at Mandarin Baptist Church in May of 2024 for students who wish to participate in this annual long-established music evaluation program. The National Guild of Piano Teachers is the largest non-profit organization of piano teachers and students in the world and was founded in 1929. Participating students perform a chosen number of memorized pieces before an audition judge along with scales and cadences and any other musicianship skills as appropriate for their level. Participating students receiving a satisfactory rating are placed in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians and are presented with a fraternity pin and Certificate/report card. Based on the numbers of pieces the student performs, he or she can receive a local, district, state, or national certificate. If a student plays 10 pieces he or she is enrolled in the National Honor program which can lead to be listed on the National Honor Roll after five years of participation. Guild is an opportunity to show their progress over the school year. Participating students will receive their certificates and pins at my spring studio recital in May and will be recognized.
